Axel, 2004, Nottingham, U.K

Concept

Located in the plaza of the National Ice Centre the 19 metre high Axel has a simple contextual elegance in harmony with its location.

The artwork slowly rotates to reflect light and subtly express the movement and dynamics of skating.

Its elegant form reaches upwards forming an elegant spire against the buildings and skyline.

Detail

Evoking the play of light on a skaters blade ice, stainless steel is polished one side and sandblasted on the other reflecting light in all weather conditions.
